Update on the Unknown Cartoonist
August 1st, 2007 by Mike T.
Still no information on the talented, mysterious, and elusive Unknown Cartoonist. We had a tip about a guy in Café Noir, but when we investigated it turned out to be just your garden-variety doodler, nowhere near as talented as UC.
We asked you tell us the meaning of the cartoon on page 12 of last month’s “real world paper edition”—the one where the two dogs are standing in the wreckage of an outhouse, and one is saying, “Somebody tore the little brown building down.” We had a couple of responses. Steve, last name not given, wrote: “You guys are pretty stupid if you don’t get it. Dogs usually use a fire hydrant or something, not an outhouse.” Well, “Steve,” you’re right. But if that’s the meaning, then why is the outhouse destroyed? Seems like the Unknown Cartoonist would have just drawn the outhouse still standing, and had one dog outside of it, and the other coming out. And maybe the one coming out is even saying something like, “Buddy, you don’t want to go in there just yet.” Or maybe the outhouse would be built around a great big tree. Get it? The dogs are going inside to do something they usually do outside. But that’s not what the Unknown Cartoonist is doing here.
Another reader suggested a different caption: “They even broke the damn coin box.” But we are of the opinion that it doesn’t need a new caption. We just want to know the meaning of the old one, and feel that we are too stupid to get it. So “Steve,” you are probably right in calling us “stupid.”
The Unknown Cartoonist, mysterious as always, has remained silent on this issue.
