Winner #1 – The Butler Did It

By Georgia Hubley – When we hosted a Halloween costume party, my husband donned butler attire for the evening. In butler mode he greeted everyone at the door.
Once the lasagna, salad and garlic bread was ready, he announced, “Dinner is served in the dining room.”
After dinner, a guest clad in a Gladiator costume playfully unsheathed his sword by the buffet table and toppled a bottle of red wine onto the white carpet.
Quickly, the butler came to the rescue and poured white wine over the red wine spill and blotted the spot with a towel until it disappeared – applause ensued. The joviality continued until midnight, the party was a huge success.
Regretfully, by morning the stain reappeared, larger than before. Professional cleaners assured us the spot was gone forever. However, the ghastly red spot not only returned after several more cleanings, it was so funny that it began to take on a life of its own; the spot actually looked like the outline of a body. All that was missing was crime scene tape. The carpet had to go.
As the workman removed the soiled carpet, one visibly shaken worker asked, “What happened here?”
My husband replied, “The butler did it.”
